Escape Ruins - Africa’s Lost Jungle

What Is It?

Escape Ruins- Africa’s Lost Jungle was a VR escape room designed to entertain both VR pros and VR novices. Designed by Joe Mares of Thousand Bit Inc, the escape room allowed players to navigate a mysterious temple on a quest for a mystical amulet.

Players progressed through eight different levels with unique puzzles they had to solve in order to progress. Each area was meticulously detailed, giving players a fully immersive experience and letting them live out their wildest Indiana Jones-style fantasies.

How Did You Build It?

The level design was already complete when I joined the project, so my job, as a narrative designer, as to create the “senior explorer” guide who would be the voice in participants’ ears as they navigated the ruins. I wanted to add an element of humor to the experience, so I made the character of Archibald Diggery the Third a bit pretentious and silly (though ultimately with a good heart). There was an independent developer working in-engine, so I worked out of a google sheet that allowed me to specify what actions would trigger each line. Much of the dialogue was designed to provide hints or clues about the different puzzles, striking a balance between not letting players flounder, but also encouraging them to experiemnt and explore.

What Makes This Project Unique?

This project required collaboration with the game designer and game developer, but coming in at a relatively late stage in the development process required some creativity. Joining projects partway through development presents some unique challenges, sinc eyou’re typically working with greater restrictions. There isn’t a lot of room for redesign or additions without impacting the project schedule or budget. I was able to deliver quality content on a tight deadline and helped to bring a character to life (and Archibald really added to the experience). Check out this clip from a walkthrough!
